Bandon Fish Hatchery
NAME: Bandon Fish Hatchery
LOCATION: Bandon, Oregon
MARKET: Land Management
SUBMARKET: Slope Stability
DESCRIPTION: Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) operates a fish hatchery located at the south end of Fish Hatchery Road east of Bandon. The facility is located along Ferry Creek and includes a small dam and reservoir that supplies water for the hatchery. The facility also supplies raw water for the Bandon Municipal Water Treatment Facility located immediately north of the hatchery.
The City of Bandon has been in the process of dredging the reservoir to restore the storage capacity. The dredging work included construction of a new access route to the north to provide an area for stockpiling the dredged material on the adjacent City parcel. The access required grading over moderate to steep terrain and included cuts and fills. We understand during the process of regrading and dredging work, a ±60-foot-long segment of the hillslope adjacent to the intake structure slumped into the northwest portion of the reservoir. The slide debris damaged the water intake structure and associated facilities. The intake facilities will be reconstructed.
SERVICE: Foundation Engineering conducted a technical consultation to assist in developing appropriate measures for initial clean up and debris disposal, evaluate the existing site conditions, establish approximate limits of the instability, and develop a plan for subsurface exploration including exploratory drilling, laboratory testing and a summary memorandum. The memorandum included a description of existing conditions, a summary of the slope stability analysis for a typical section, and a discussion of the proposed mitigation options.
